2023 Tax Information
As of December 31, 2022, the option to utilize the "Temporary Flat Rate Method" for declaring home office expenses on the T2200s form has concluded. The Canadian Revenue Agency introduced this approach, enabling employees to claim a flat rate of up to $2 for each day worked from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a maximum of $400 for the tax year 2020 and a maximum of $500 for the tax years 2021 and 2022.
The Temporary Flat Rate Method no longer applies for the 2023 taxation year.
2022 Tax Information
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced that those who worked from home more than 50% of the time from home for a period of at least four consecutive weeks in the year (2020, 2021, or 2022) due to the COVID-19 pandemic will now be eligible to claim the home office expense deduction for the 2022 tax year.
The simplified flat rate method that was introduced for the taxation year 2020 is once again made available for taxation year 2022. According to the CRA, the temporary flat deduction method will allow eligible Canadians to claim a deduction of $2 for each day (exclude: Days off, vacation days, sick days and other leaves of absence) they worked from home because of COVID-19 up to a maximum of $500. The maximum you can claim using the temporary flat rate method is up to $400 (200 working days) per individual in 2020 and up to $500 (250 working days) per individual in 2021 and in 2022. Under the flat rate method, you will NOT need T2200S tax form signed by Victoria University to be eligible nor will you need to perform any detail calculations and retain any supporting invoices/receipts to support your claim.
The CRA has also made amendments to its work-from-home tax forms (T2200S and Form T777S) and has launched a calculator to assist in the calculation of eligible home office expenses for those that choose not to claim the flat deduction method. To make a detailed claim, you will require a confirmation of employment form (T2200S). This form is available upon request. Victoria University will issue a T2200S form to qualified employees to validate your conditions of employment to allow you to make a detailed expense claim. Please note under this method, you are required to retain all supporting documents (e.g., invoices, receipts, etc.) to support your calculation and claim.
Visit the Home office expenses for employees webpage on the CRA’s website for more detailed information.
Please contact Victoria University Finance and Payroll Services department at vic.finance@utoronto.ca to request a T2200S if you wish to make a detailed claim. There is no need to obtain T2200S tax form for the flat rate method. If you have any questions regarding this communication, please contact us.
